Chiquimula, Guatemala - On Thursday, Guatemalan national civil police arrested Max Eduardo Cordón, 72, for sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl. Police and the state's child social services had been investigating allegations that Erika Mariela Osorio Vélez, 34, was allowing men to have sex with her daughter for Q400 ($52 U.S.), according to Pablo Castillo, spokesman for the National Civil Police in Guatemala. Vélez was also taken into custody and is facing charges for selling her daughter for sex and forcing her into prostitution.
The 8-year-old girl told authorities that Vélez would give her Q100 ($13 U.S.) after she would have sex with men. The mother told her daughter to comply and fulfill Cordón's sexual gratification, according to the girl.
The girl admitted that Cordón had three previous sexual encounters with her. The child was placed with a state child social services agency to protect her.
Last February, Luis Armando Aguilar, 68, also an alderman from the municipality of Chiquimula was arrested for having repeated sex with a child. Aguilar remains free on bond and is awaiting trial.
