La Libertad, Chiapas, México - On Monday, José Joaquín Arcos Orozco, the Municipal Treasurer for La Libertad in the State of Chiapas was ousted from office during a protest by local citizens. Orozco was accused of mismanagement of municipal funds, negligence in paying municipal workers and not paying utility bills by the local government. Orozco was not in his office when a large group of peaceful protesters took over the municipal building and forced the Municipal President Gamaliel López Arcos and secretary to officially draw up an act to oust Orozco from office. The protesters were made up of land and business owners including local residents who became tired of government corruption, which also warned both López Arcos and the secretary of the consequences of continued corruption and their anticipated ouster, if they fail to work for the citizens.
The citizens will now meet and decided who they will nominate to take Orozco's job as municipal treasurer.
