Cates facing life in prison for violating victim's civil rights during a sexual assault while on duty.

Milwaukee- On Wednesday, former Milwaukee Police Officer Ladmarald Cates, 44, was found guilty in federal court for one felony count of violating an 19-year-old woman's civil rights on July 16, 2010 during a sexual assault while on duty. The jury added an aggravated sexual abuse enchancer to the charge and conviction. Cates and his partner were responding to a "911" call.
The woman made a 911 call in July. When Cates was investigating a brawl at the 1500 block of Center St., he allegedly assaulted the victim and forced her to perform sex acts and oral sex inside the residence. The assault occured while his partner and her family were outside.
When the victim complained to police, they held her for 12 hours before taking her to the hospital to get evidence from the alleged sexual assault.
Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn later fired Cates.
Cates is facing up to life in a federal prison and fines up to $250,000.
