Milwaukee, Wisconsin - On Saturday, an estimated 140 bilingual books were distributed at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church learning facility to children studying catechism during the annual Three Kings Day celebration to promote literacy and higher education. The two day book giveaway will distribute about 400 books provided by the national non-profit First Book at an affordable price, which the American Federation of Teachers Union Local 212 (AFT Local 212) representing Milwaukee Area Technical College teachers and local partners were able to purchase and qiveaway to children at the Guadalupe Church and at St. Adalbert Catholic Church on Sunday, both located in the Southside of Milwaukee.
Luz Sosa, the Member-at-Large of AFT Local 212, Michael David Rosen, former president of AFT Local 212 (retired), Milwaukee County Supervisor Peggy West, Milwaukee Alderman José Pérez, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, the Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera including unión members and students distributed the books to the children. The annual book giveaway during the Three Kings Day promotes literacy, continued education by encouraging children to graduate from high school and seek higher education, according to Sosa.
The Three Kings Day is celebrated in Latin America, Mexico and in the U.S. by many Latino families who actually open their gifts in January as an annual tradition instead on December 25th, Christmas Day.
