Milwaukee, WI - On Friday, the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Western District of Wisconsin has filed charges against Kristen Smith, 32, of Colorado in connection with the kidnapping of 6-day-old Kayden J. Powell on Thursday and taking him across the several state lines. Smith was arrested by police in the City of West Branch after it was learned that she had a Texas warrant for theft.
Smith was being investigated for the disappearance of Powell after his mother reported him missing from her Beloit home in Wisconsin around 4:34 a.m. on Thursday. Smith said, that she was the half sister of the baby's mother Brianna Marshall, 18, on her father's side of the family.
When Smith was detained in Iowa by a West Branch police officer on a Texas warrant, she confessed after a prosthetic pregnancy belly in her vehicle was discovered, a stroller, baby car seat and baby clothes. She had told police that she had given birth, but when tested it turned out she hadn't been expecting a child.
She eventually told police where to find baby Powell at a Come and Go gas station off I-80.
If convicted, Smith is facing life in prison on federal kidnapping charges.
