46-year-old Texas Capitol Murder Escapee Gonzalo Artemio López Killed In Shootout With Atascosa County Sheriff Deputies

López allegedly killed a family of five in Leon County on Thursday and took multiple weapons.

Jourdanton, Texas - The Atascosa County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) reported that escapee Texas convicted killer Gonzalo Artemio López, 46, aka, "Gonzo" has been killed in a shootout exchange with Atascosa County Sheriff deputies at around 10:30p.m. in the Town of Jourdanton South of San Antonio.

Law enforcement officers recovered an AR-15 and several handguns from the shootout scene. According to the ACSO account, a deputy spotted the 1999 White Chevy truck that was reported missing from the residence of a family of one adult male and four children that were found deceased in Leon County on Thursday afternoon. The Leon County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for López who is believed to have murdered the family members and stole multiple weapons and the truck.

Deputies pursued López for a short distance and road spikes were used to puncture the tires of the truck. López lost control of the truck and crashed. He exited the truck with an AR-15 and several handguns and fired at deputies. The deputies returned fire and shot him. Life saving measures were apply, but López died at the scene, according to authorities.

López was being transported to a medical facility in shackles on May 12, 2022, but got loose and stabbed a corrections officer and then fled on foot.

López was convicted of a several felonies that included a shootout with a Webb County Sheriff's deputy in 2004 and for killing a man who was being held for ranson with a pickax in Hidalgo County and he was serving two consecutive life terms in Texas.

López was a member of the Mexican mafia drug cartel.
