Mother Of Slain Angel J. Ortega Seeks Public Help In Locating Alleged Murder Suspects

August 28, 2017

Milwaukee, WI - On Monday, Tina Ortega posted on Facebook (FB) several FB account photos of what she identified are the two suspects wanted by police in connection with her son's homicide, Angel J. Ortega, 20, at Kaña Mojito Club, a local night club in Milwaukee's Southside. Apparently, Angel and his brother went to Kaña and security refused to let Angel's brother from getting inside due to a dress code issue, but allowed Angel walk inside without checking his ID, according to his brother. Angel was 20 and wasn't carrying an ID with him at the time.
The suspects got into an altercation inside of Kaña over a woman and were kicked out. They were outside when they pulled out guns and fired hitting Angel and two other victims. A female victim was also struck in arm as she ran to her vehicle.
The shooting actually happened outside in the La Fuente parking lot and not inside as it was reported earlier.
Rafael Ortega who is Angel's uncle told Hispanic News Network U.S.A. (HNNUSA) that Angel didn't have his ID with him and that police reported his age at 23, but he is only 20. Rafael says, there were two shooters (Estrada and Sánchez) and they began to shoot at those exiting the back door after an altercation broke inside. As a 23-year-old male victim was exiting the suspects who were kicked put of Kaña began to fire and he was shot in the stomach twice. Angel then walked out from Kaña and was struck in the chest and heart, he managed to walk back inside Kaña and told those inside he was just shot and then fell.
Police recovered 6 spent cartridges from a .380 Caliber handgun and 5 spent cartridges from a .45 Caliber handgun in the parking lot.
Police responded to a shooting at Kaña just after 1:45 a.m. on Saturday and found that three people were shot and Angel died from his injuries. The two other victims survived with none life threatening injuries.
Sánchez, 24, and Estrada, 25, were each charged on Monday with three felony counts that include 1st-degree reckless homicide and party to crime and use of a dangerous weapon, if convicted they're facing up to 60-years in prison; 1st-degree reckless injury and party to crime and use of a dangerous weapon, if convicted, they're facing up to 40-years in prison and 1st-degree reckless endangering safety and party to crime and use of a dangerous weapon, if convicted they're facing up to 12-years and six months in prison and up to $25,000 in fines, according to court records.
According to Tina, she is seeking for the public and FB users help in locating the two alleged suspects connected to her son's murder. Tina identified the suspects as Omar Estrada and José Sánchez and posted their FB account photos.
Milwaukee police confirmed that two suspects have been identified and felony warrants have been issued for their arrest. The U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI have been also notified and are helping to located the two suspects.
Angel Velazquez, the owner of Kaña was contacted by HNNUSA and did confirmed that the shooting had occurred at the adjacent parking lot from Kaña and that video surveillance of the shooting outside by the suspects was turned over to police.
If anyone has any information leading to the whereabouts of both Estrada and Sánchez, police should be notified, according to Tina.

Update: In an exclusive video by HNNUSA, Alex Ramirez, the newly assigned Captain to the Milwaukee Police District 2 Station (MPD2) confirmed during a Walker's Point Association community gathering that Kaña Mojito "is on a nuisance status." Officer Kevin Vodicka from the Community Prosecution Unit at MPD2 says that several battery incidents have occurred at Kaña.
In December 2016, a 10-day Class B Tavern and Public Entertainment Premises license suspension was approved for Kaña Mojito Club, 625 S. 5th St. operated by Angel Velazquez. Alderman José G. Pérez voted for license suspension along with other aldermen. The Common Council voted 10-5 to reduce the 60-day suspension to a 10-day suspension under recommendation by Alderman Pérez.
Velazquez has been billed for police services at least for two prior incidents and will most likely be facing another bill up for $5,000 for last weekend's incident, according to Officer Vodicka.

Two Pending Wisconsin Anti-immigrant Bills By State Republicans Remain In Limbo

The Republican controlled legislature has two anti-immigrant bills pending, which would enforce federal immigration laws in the state.

By H. Nelson Goodson
Hispanic News Network U.S.A.

August 8, 2017

Madison, WI - Republican legislators in Wisconsin have introduced two anti-immigrant bills, which Assembly Bill 190 (AB190)/Senate Bill 275 (SB275) would allow law enforcement to hold a suspect involved in a crime that they believed to be an undocumented immigrant for an additional 48 hours by complying with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests and Assembly Bill 127 (AB127) would allow Wisconsin residents to filed civil lawsuits against their local government, if they believe immigration laws are not being enforced. AB127 relates to "prohibiting local ordinances, resolutions, and policies that prohibit immigration status inquiries and reports to, and cooperation with, other units of government about the presence of illegal aliens, authorizing a resident of this state to commence an enforcement action, and providing a reduction in shared revenue payments."
ICE detainer requests have been ruled by a federal court of not being legal binding to hold individuals and law enforcement agencies can ignore such ICE requests. Only a court warrant signed by a judge are consideted legal binding to hold an individual.
Both AB190 and AB127 have been introduced in the Wisconsin State Assembly and are pending in committees, which no scheduled hearings have been set for public review.
If the anti-sanctuary bills AB190/SB275 move forward and are approved by the Republican controlled legislature, the dairy industry will be affected by the lack of dairy immigrant workers and the price of milk will reach $8 per gallon. About 80% of dairy and farm workers in Wisconsin are immigrants.
In June, immigrant rights activists and Voces de la Frontera, a workers and immigrant rights organization held a protest rally against the bills in Madison. Luz Sosa, a local immigrant and civil rights activist and a Professor of Economics at the Milwaukee Area Technical College who was at the rally to protest several ant-sanctuary bills in Madison says, that Wisconsin residents could see an increase of $8.00 in the price of a gallon of milk at grocery stores, if the anti-sanctuary bills are approved and immigrant dairy workers leave their jobs to avoid being targeted by local immigration enforcement efforts.

H-2A Guest Worker From Mexico Died From Heat Stroke After Being Forced To Work In Hot Conditions At Sarbanand Farms

An estimated 80 H-2A guest workers from different parts of Mexico are out of a job for complaining of unfair working conditions and being forced to work on hot days in temperatures over 100 degrees even when sick due to the heat.

By H. Nelson Goodson
Hispanic News Network U.S.A.

August 7, 2017

Sumas, Washington - On Sunday, Familias Unidas por la Justicia and Xolotl Edgar FranX posted on Facebook several videos showing H-2A guest workers from Mexico in dilemma and seeking help from multiple non-profit organizations after being dismissed from the Sarbanand Farms. The owner and operators of the Sarbanand Farms, where blueberries are picked dismissed the H-2A workers simply for complaining about the unsafe working conditions at the farms, after Ernesto Silva Ibarra, 28, a guest worker became sick about four days ago working in the field in hot temperatures. Ibarra was given some medical attention, but was later forced to go back to work and collapsed from a heat stroke and was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he went into coma, was in life supports, but died from brain damage, according to some of the workers. An H-2A worker contacted Ramon Torres from Familias Unidas por la Justicia who began to organize fellow farmworker rights activists to help the guest workers in need.
Torres confirmed that four other H-2A guest workers are in the hospital as well and that one side of their bodies is paralyzed and once released from the hospital, they would need medical care and medicine.
Ibarra's death was confirmed by the King County Medical Examiner's office on Monday.
The H-2A workers were given about an hour to vacate the cabins where they stayed. An encampment was set nearby by the Community to Community Development to temporarily provide shelter, tents, portable bathrooms and food for the H-2A workers who have been threatened for deportation. Apparently a private California contractor, Nidia Pérez who works for Munger Brothers LLC managed to transfer most of the guest workers to Sumas from a California farm associated with Munger farms when their visas had expired (including work permits) and had been working in Sumas at the Sarbanand Farms for about a month without valid visas, according to the H-2A guest workers. They were given work contracts in English only by the contractor and were promised that they would get the contracts in Spanish, but they haven't gotten the translated contracts, according to the H-2A guest workers.
Edgar Frank posted on his Facebook account, "H2A workers from Mexico got fired today after they found out that one of their compañeros, who had been telling the company for 4 days that he was not feeling well, is now at Harborview Hospital in Seattle and in a coma. They refused to work because they wanted to improve the overall safety of the farm by having onsite medical attention, shaded areas, and food. After they were fired the company told them they had one hour to leave the property, so they packed their suitcases and backpacks and walked for miles until they found a friendly family to help them. They worked for Sarbanand Farms in Sumas..."
Community to Community Development (C2C) posted on their FB account that "on Saturday, August 5, 2017, C2C marches with H2a workers from Sarabanan Farms in Sumas WA to the company's offices to protest the unsafe working conditions that caused the collapse of their 28 yr old co-worker that is now on life support at Harborview Hospital in Seattle. The workers have been picking blueberries under harsh production standards in high heat and smoke from the fires in BC.  They have been complaining for days of health issues; including their co-worker who finally collapsed in the blueberry field. Only then did company management act."
Other groups also helping the H-2A guest workers are WWU Students for Farmworkers Justice and Old School Boycott Committee.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "The H-2A temporary agricultural program allows agricultural employers who anticipate a shortage of domestic workers to bring nonimmigrant foreign workers to the U.S. to perform agricultural labor or services of a temporary or seasonal nature. Employment is of a seasonal nature where it is tied to a certain time of year by an event or pattern, such as a short annual growing cycle, and requires labor levels above what is necessary for ongoing operations. Employment is of a temporary nature when the employer's need to fill the position with a temporary worker will, except in extraordinary circumstances, last no longer than 1 year."
