San Luis Potosi, Mexico - On Wednesday, Mexican Marines captured Iván Velázquez Caballero, 42, aka, "Zeta-50" or "El Taliban" in the capitol city of San Luis Potosi without firing a shot, according to the Department of the Secretary of Marines (Semar). Caballero had more than 400 Zetas under his command in four states, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Coahuila and Guanajuato. Caballero controlled Nuevo Laredo and Monterey in 2007 and is considered the main financial executive for the Zeta criminal organization, according to José Luis Vergara, Spokesman for Semar.
Caballero, who is originally from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas was arrested without firing a shot in the neighborhood of Tangamanga along with two other Zetas identified as, Carlos Uriel de Santiago Hernández, 19, of San Luis Potosi and Manuel Antonio Guerrero, 27, of Monterey. Mexican Marines confiscated several vehicles, weapons, marijuana and $20,000 (U.S) in cash.
The Mexican Attorney General's Office in March offered $30,000,000 pesos ($2.4M U.S.) for any information leading to Caballero's arrest.
Caballero got his alias "El Taliban" for having his rivals and victims of the Zetas tortured and beheaded.
