Milwaukee, WI - On Monday, thousands of participants marched regardless of slight rain showers from the Southside of Milwaukee to the Milwaukee County Courthouse in downtown seeking support from Governor Scott Walker (R) to remove Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. from office. Sheriff Clarke requested to join the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 287g program, which allows for deputies to ask for legal status from suspected undocumented immigrants.
Governor Walker has said, that it is not his job to remove Clarke. Sheriff Clarke was elected to office and has not been charged for any wrongdoing or convicted of a felony.
Voces de la Frontera an immigrant and workers rights organization sponsored the march. Last February, more than 165 local and statewide Latino businesses closed for one day during an immigrant march and an estimated  $1.3M of business loss was endured by the owners. If the same Latino businesses closed once again this time around, it is estimated that the Latino business owners faced another $1.3M loss as well, totalling at least $2.6M in business loss, within less than four months.
At the rally in the Milwaukee County Court House, Christine Neumann-Ortiz, the executive director of Voces de la Frontera (VDLF) announced that VDLF will join the national boycott of Wells Fargo and Chase Banks who are the largest financial bank institutions for the private prison corporations.
This year, Acción Ciudadana de Wisconsin (ACW) also participated in the immigrant march and many business owners who are members also closed their businesses in support of the immigrant community, according to Luz Sosa, the Community Organizer for ACW.
