Sauk City, WI - Sauk County authorities are looking for a missing woman believed to have abducted her child in violation of a court-ordered custody arrangement in a divorce custody battle. Maria Jose Mendieta, 20, failed to return her son, Leonelly "Leo" Gabriel, 3, to his father. Mendieta received custody of her son on February 20 and was supposed to return her son to his father, Edgar Omar Barron of North Freedom on February 26.
The Sauk County Sheriff's Department and the Sauk Prairie Police Department are seeking any information to Mendieta's whereabouts. Authorities suspect that Mendieta who also is known as Maria Barron or Maria J. Rampa might be traveling to Mexico or Uraguay, according to a joint press release by the sheriff's and police departments.
Mendieta might be also traveling with Alejandro Martinez, a Mexican national from Reynosa, Mexico in a navy blue 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager with Wisconsin license plates 477-JJP. Mendieta has three tattoos, a Snoopy and a Charlie Brown, including a star on her right hand.
U.S. Border Customs and Mexican border authorities have been notified that Mendieta might have fled the country.
