Milwaukee, WI - On Wednesday, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. announced during a conservative radio talk show with Viki McKenna on WISN 1130 AM, that he will accept an assistant secretary position in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) next month. Clarke will join the Office of Partnership and Engagement at the DHS.
What does it mean for Milwaukee County? Sheriff Clarke's acceptance of the position will no doubt void the 287g ICE enforcement agreement request by Clarke and it will no longer be applied at the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office in Wisconsin. It seems that Sheriff Clarke jumped the gun and unofficially confirmed that he accepted the position with DHS, but the DHS sent out a tweet that "Sr. positions are announced when made official by the Sec. No such announcement w/regard to the Office of Public Engagement has been made."
Governor Scott Walker (R) can appoint another replacement for Sheriff Clarke.
Hispanic News Network U.S.A. (HNNUSA) first Tweeted on March 22, that Sheriff Clarke was expected to resign from his position when it was learned from a credible source that Clarke would actually resign.
Currently, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has reported multiple inmate deaths and one of them, Terrill Thomas had his water turned off in his cell and he died from the lack of drinking water.
At least seven Milwaukee County Correction officers are facing criminal charges by the district attorney's office after a grand jury recommended charges.
The seven county officials who may now face charges in connection with the Thomas death by withholding water for seven days are Milwaukee County jail commander Major Nancy Evans, Lt. Kashka Meadors and corrections officers Jordon Johnson, Thomas Laine, James Ramsey-Guy, John Weber and Dominique Smith.
