Los Angeles, CA - On Wednesday, Sergeant Steven Owen, 53, a 29-year Veteran of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) was reported killed while investigating a home burglary in the suburb of Lancaster, according to the LASD. A press release states that Sgt. Owen succumbed to injuries when he was shot by a burglary suspect running from an apartment building.
The 27-year-old suspect was able to get control of Sgt. Owen's patrol vehicle and rammed it at a second patrol vehicle, which another deputy was responding to the scene. The suspect fled and later entered a nearby home where two teenagers were inside.
A LASD SWAT unit responded and entered the home as the suspect exited through the rear of the home and jumped over a wall. Several deputies fired their weapons and the suspect was struck in the upper torso and was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect is described as an Afro-American male who was recently paroled. A weapon was recovered from the suspect. Sgt. Owen died from his injuries at a local hospital.
