Mexico City, Mexico, D.F. - On Thursday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto confirmed during a five hour meeting with the parents and family members of the 43 Ayotzinapa missing students that he will establish a special federal investigative unit to locate missing persons and to investigate what happened to the missing 43 Ayotzinapa students. Public pressure, protests and a debate on Thursday in the federal Mexican Senate led by Senator Layda Sansores from the Labor Party has finally forced a complete investigation into what happened to the missing Ayotzinapa students.
The former Mexican federal Attorney General, Jesús Murillo Karam has been criticized for fabricating and lying that the Ayotzinapa students were killed and burned at a garbage dump in Cocula in September 26 - 27, 2014. A major cover-up by the Nieto administration had been alleged and allegations by a report released by the InterAmerica Commission for Human Rights indicated that 144 witnesses testified that the Mexican military and Federal Police were also involved in the murder, kidnapping and the missing 43 Ayotzinapa students.
Senator Sansores on Thursday during a presentation on the Senate floor called for an investigation into whether the military and Federal Police were involved and to establish commissions to investigate all political and government officials who attempted to cover-up the military and Federal Police involvement in the Ayotzinapa case.
More than 70 suspects have been arrested in the Ayotzinapa case including the mayors of Iguala and Cocula in the state of Guerrero and corrupt members of the municipal police from both towns. Also members of the Guerrero Unidos, a criminal organization have been arrested in connection with the missing Ayotzinapa students.  But no high ranking military or Federal Police supervisors have been arrested or charged in the case, according to Senator Sansores. Sansores and now President Nieto are pushing to discover the truth of what happened in Ayotzinapa. Sansores has accused Nieto of knowing and attempting to cover-up the truth, but year long public protests around Mexico has forced Nieto to act and the federal Senate to finally debate the Ayotzinapa case.
