Rialto, California - On Sunday, Rodney King, 47, was found dead in his pool, according to police. Police responded to an emergency call that King's body was discovered by his fiancée Cynthia Kelly around 5:25 a.m. in the bottom of his pool.
Kelly told police that King had been drinking and smoking marijuana late Saturday and when she woke up the next morning, King's body was in the pool, attempts to revive him failed and he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
King became famous after police in Los Angeles chased and then stopped him for a drunk driving incident on March 3, 1991. Police then beat King with batons for 15 minutes after he resisted and then tased him multiple times. The police beating was captured on videotape by a nearby witness. King was beaten between 53 to 56 times with wooden batons, one officer admitted he kicked King six times and another confessed to kicking King once.
Three L.A. officers and a supervisor were later acquitted from criminal charges sparking riots in California resulting in 55 deaths.
The officers acquitted were Theodore Briseño, Lourence Powell, Timothy Wind and Sergeant Stacey Koon. Powell and Koon were later convicted for civil rights violation in King's case and sentenced to 30 months in a federal prison.
King also won $4 million in a civil case against the officers and the City of Los Angeles.
