Mexico City - On Friday, the Mexican Federal Attorney General's Office (PGR) confirmed in a news release that Mexican Marines had actually arrested Felíx Beltrán León instead of Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar as previously announced by the Secretary of the Navy (Semar). Semar apparently on Thursday made a mistake and believed that the suspect they had in custody was one of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera's sons. El Chapo, the kingpin for the Sinaloa Cartel is also wanted by the PGR and the U.S. government.
Semar has not officially confirmed, if Beltrán León was arrested by marines instead of Guzmán Salazar.
In a news conference, Eladia León Vega, an attorney and mother of Beltrán León acknowleged that her son was mistakenly identified as Guzmán Salazar. She requested for the PGR to release her son. The PGR said, they will continue to hold Beltrán León to determine, if he is involved with a criminal organization.
Along with Beltrán León, the marines also arrested Kevin Daniel Beltrán Rios, 19, his stepbrother. They confiscated, two weapons, four granades, $135,000 U.S. and $295,000 pesos ($22,692 U.S.), multiple ID's and two vehicles from both Beltrán León and Rios.
Guzmán Salazar is still at large and remains a fugitive. He is the son of María Alejandrina Salazar Hernández and the infamous Sinaloa Cartel druglord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera.
Guzmán Salazar had been indicted in a federal court in April 2009 and then he was also indicted again in Illinois on 2011 for conspirarcy to smuggle multiple kilograms of drugs. Guzmán Salazar was in charge of coordinating the smuggling of cocaine and heroin into the U.S. for the Sinaloa Cartel.
