Mexico, D.F. - On Friday, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted that Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, 57, the fugitive Sinaloa Cartel leader was arrested by military police this morning. Guzman Loera was taken into custody in the city of Los Mochis in the state of Sinaloa.
A tip about a contract negotiation for the making of El Chapo movie between lawyers representing Guzman Loera and a movie maker led to Guzman Loera's arrest, according to the Mexican federal Attorney General's Office. A $5M reward was offered by the U.S. and $3M by the Mexican government. The U.S. has filed an extradition request for Guzman Loera with the Mexican government. El Chapo has been indicted in the U.S. for drug trafficking and money laundering charges.
Arely Gómez González, the federal Mexican Attorney General reported that military police (Marines) had launched an operation near the city of Los Mochis on Thursday and noticed suspicious vehicles circulating at a residence. When the Mexican Marines investigated the residence, a gunfight erupted. Five suspected members of the Sinaloa Cartel were killed, six other suspects were taken into custody and one Marine was reported injured. Guzman Loera and his head of security Jorge Iván Gastélum Ávila, aka, Orso Iván Gastélum Cruz managed to escape through a city sewage tunnel system and later got out to steal a vehicle. Marines then on Friday morning spotted the stolen vehicle traveling along the Los Mochis-Navojoa road and stopped it. Guzman Loera and Ávila were then taken into custody. Marines took both suspects to a nearby motel where military reinforcements arrived. Guzman Loera and Ávila were taken to Mexico City for processing. Guzman Loera will be transported to the federal Altiplano prison once again from where he escaped from to await the extradition process to the U.S.
