Washington, D.C. - On Sunday, President Barack H. Obama confirmed that Osama bin Laden, 54, the mastermind of the 911 attack of the World Trade Center was killed in a 40 minute gunbattle with U.S. military personnel in Pakistan. He was killed at a mansion in Abbottabad near the Capitol of Pakistan in Islamabad. The three story mansion had been under surveillance since August, it was valued at $1 million and had no phone lines or internet access, 8 foot walls with barb wire on top secured the compound and trash was burned by those living inside, according to military intelligence reports.
U.S. military personnel recovered Bin Laden's body and were able to identified it. His body was washed and covered in a white sheet before disposing it at sea after an Islamic funeral, Pentagon officials reported. DNA test results determined that it was the leader of Al-Qaeda, Bin Laden. The Bin Laden DNA was compared to DNA from Bin Laden's family, according to military officials.
President Obama said, he received intelligence reports in August that Bin Laden was hiding at a compound in Pakistan. Last week, military officials confirmed he was at the compound and President Obama ordered a small elite U.S. force of about 20-30 Navy Seals on Sunday to strike the compound. U.S. military in a gunbattle with members of Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden ended with Bin Laden getting killed. No American military or civilians reported killed in the strike.
Military personnel recovered Bin Laden's documents pertaining to Al-Qaeda cells around the World. The military operation was not a join military effort with Pakistan military to keep leaks from spilling out about the attack.
One of Bin Laden's son was also killed, three Al-Qaeda information couriers, including a woman were reported killed. One of the couriers had been tracked down and followed by U.S. personnel. The Bin Laden courier and his brother lived at the compound, which was larger than any home around it. The brothers had no means of financial support and speculation grew that the compound was built in 2005 to hide someone like Bin Laden.
Obama said, he made it a priority to get Bin Laden dead or alive. Bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda attacked the U.S. and we declared war against Al-Qaeda and we are not at war with Islam, justice has prevailed, Obama told the nation and the World.
It has been 9 1/2 years, that the U.S. government had been trying to locate or kill Bin Laden for ordering the 911 destruction of the twin towers and other terrorist attacks. More than 3,000 people died at the New York World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Jubilation and celebrations spreading around the World and people resorted to chanting, "U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A." The U.S. Departement of State had offered $25 million reward and an additional $2 million was offered by both Airline Pilots Association and the Air Transport Association for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Bin Laden. Bin Laden was also wanted dead or alive by the Obama Administration.
