Milwaukee - On Tuesday night, an unknown suspect or suspects broke into La Luz Del Mundo church in the 1300 block of S. Cesar E. Chavez Drive and stole several video cameras and equipment, according to Jose Lopez. Lopez, 50, is the caretaker and handy man in charge of maintaining the church. He said, the unknown suspects apparently broke into the church from a side door facing the alley at around 10:30 p.m. when the cameras were turned off when they were taken down from near the alter. Police were called at about 5:00 a.m. when a parishioner noticed the break-in. Surveillance footage was reviewed from an adjacent business and from inside the church.
The value of the cameras and equipment was estimated at more than $700. An estimated $400 dollars in cash was also taken from inside the church. The break-in on Tuesday is the second time the church has been targeted by robbers, since it was opened.
Lopez says that the church provides daily services for at least 200 parishioners and they have 40 churches throughout the World.
Lopez is originally from Jalisco and has been a block watch captain, since 1990 and has volunteered as a Milwaukee Police Auxilary Officer for 7 years. He has been a church member for almost 28 years.
No suspects have been taken into custody, as of yet, according to Lopez.
