Raleigh, North Carolina - On Wednesday, MSNBC dot com reported that former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate John Edwards is under federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) for allegations that campaign contributions were used to hide an affair with a former staffer. A federal grand jury probe focused on possible campaign violations in the last two years is expected to be unsealed in early June. An indictment is likely against Edwards, according to sources in the USDOJ,
Edwards is accused of using campaign contributions to hide an affair with Reille Hunter who had a child with Edwards. Hunter was in charge of photographing and video recording Edwards during the presidential bid for 2008. He began his presidential campaign in December 26, 2006.
Huge donations by wealthy contributors were provided to the campaign and federal investigators alleged that more than $1 million was used to cover-up the relationship. The Edwards extramarital affair was later exposed by the Enquire tabloid.
