Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico - On Thursday, the Mexican Federal Police announced that Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, 51, aka, "El Viceroy" had been taken into custody without incident in Torreón. Vicente is the brother of Amado Carrillo Fuentes, former leader of the Juarez Cartel who died in 1997 during a plastic facial surgery. The plastic surgeon involved in the surgery that caused Amado's death was later executed, tortured, his body dismembered and then burned.
The Mexican government offered $30M pesos ($2.3M U.S.) and the U.S. Department of State offered $5M for information leading to Vicente's arrest. Vicente is wanted in the U.S. for capitol murder, operating a criminal enterprise, conspiracy to import control substances, conspiracy to possess and intent to deliver controlled substances, money laundering and forfeiture.
In the 1990's the Juarez Cartel controlled major drug routes, drug manufacturing and trafficking in ten Mexican states. Under Vicente's leadership, the Juarez Cartel expanded to more than 12 states in Mexico and is attributed to mass murders, torture, drug trafficking, kidnappings, extortions and money laundering.
The Juarez Cartel engaged in a drug route feud with the Pacific Cartel for years.
