Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico - On Saturday, Octavio Atilano Román Tirado, a community organizer and radio program host for "Asi es mi Tierra" at El Sol Newspaper offices where two radio stations XEVOX 970 AM and XENX 1290 AM are transmitted was fatally shot multiple times while live on the air. Two armed suspects around 10:40 a.m. went to El Sol del Pacifico and asked where Román Tirado was working and they made their way to the cabin where he was transmitting live and shot him.
Staff members at El Sol panicked, ran for cover and the shooting disrupted their daily newspaper operations. Román Tirado's murder has sent shock waves to live radio announcers in Mexico and are looking into security measures to prevent another murder on live radio or television news broadcasts by local and national TV network stations as well.
The suspects fled and no arrests have been made.
Román Tirado who was also the leader of the Picachos Lake criticized the federal and state government for not allowing residents commercialize their fishing after a major project was finished on the lake. He also criticized the state for not providing housing and other needs to the local citizens.
Both the state and federal governments initiated an investigation into his homicide.
