Nocona, Texas - The Texas Rangers are investigating the death of off-duty Montague County Sheriff Deputy Larry Bryan Hostetter, 41, on early Monday. A Nocona police officer responded early Monday to a disturbance call at Hostetter's residence. Once at the residence, the officer fatally shot Hostetter after he pointed a gun at the officer.
The officer had radio in that Hostetter was "suicidal again," then 25 minutes later, the officer called for back up, a supervisor and EMS. He reported that an officer was down and had been shot.
Hotsetter's three children were at home when the shooting occurred, according to Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham.
Hostetter began to work for the Montague County Sheriff's Office in 2000 and in 2013 became a deputy. He previously worked for the Nocona Police Department. Both the officer and Hostetter knew each other.
The officer has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
On Saturday, off-duty Dallas Police Officer Larry Tuttle, 40, was fatally shot by Otto Machelle Thomas, 42, who then committed suicide. Tuttle was shot multiple times by Thomas.
Thomas had called 911 twice and identified herself as Tuttle's girlfriend. She admitted to killing Tuttle because he was about to hit her again and was very abusive. Thomas told the 911 operator, "He was ready to hit me again and I just went off. I killed him because he was going to hit me again." She then asked for someone to come over to pick up her 6-year-old daughter shortly before she committed suicide, according to Dallas police.
Police had arrived at the scene and were outside the apartment where Thomas was located. She was by a window, police told her to put the weapon away and to unlock the door while she was on the second call to 911. Thomas said, that she had already put the gun away and that she was walking over to open the door, but moments later they heard a gunshot, according to Randy Blankenbaker, the Assistant Chief assigned to the Dallas Investigation Unit.
When the SWAT team went into the apartment, they found Tuttle deceased with multiple gunshot wounds and Thomas with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Blankenbaker said.
Tuttle was married to Kandie Morgan, but were separated and have a 10-year-old son.
Apparently, Blankenbaker stated that Thomas has family in Mississippi and had recently lived in Arlington, but believed she was homeless and might have been staying with Tuttle.
