Former Co-founder Of El Conquistador Newspaper Surprised That Former Employee Led Heroin Ring In Milwaukee

Milwaukee, WI (HNNUSA) - On Wednesday, H. Nelson Goodson, the co-founder for El Conquistador Newspaper couldn't believe that a former employee of the newspaper has been named as one of the leaders of a major heroin ring from the East Side of Milwaukee. Goodson remembers Charles Ortiz Jr. as a former employee that worked alongside Goodson while delivering the Conquistador Newspaper in the South Side of Milwaukee. Ortiz Jr. was a well mannered young man who enjoyed the newspaper route and meeting people, Goodson said. Goodson was Ortiz Jr.'s immediate route supervisor at the time.

When Goodson saw a news cast report and showed where Ortiz Jr., one of the leaders of the East Side Mafiosos lived, he noticed that it was the same house where El Conquistador Newspaper publisher Victor Huyke lived with his long time partner María Galarza Ruiz who is related to both Ortiz Jr. and Charles Ortiz Sr.

Huyke had given an opportunity for Ortiz Jr. to work at El Conquistador Newspaper. Goodson also met Ortiz Sr. and he was real social, friendly with people and the Conquistador staff. He would visit Huyke at times at the newspaper. About three years ago, most of the Conquistador staff was related to Huyke.

Huyke took over the newspaper after five other co-founders including Goodson decided to move on. Huyke and the co-founders are credited for creating a voice and a credible news source for the Milwaukee Hispanic community.

Goodson is the administrator for Hispanic News Network U.S.A. (HNNUSA) and was a former managing editor and publisher for the weekly Milwaukee Spanish Journal Newspaper. Goodson was also instrumental in helping to start the now defunct Spanish Times.

In college, Goodson managed the student Satélite Bilingual Newspaper at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Satélite later became a Latino community based newspaper and Goodson was one of its managing editors.

● Charles Ortiz Jr., 29, has been charged with five felony counts for possession with intent to deliver heroin and one felony count for possession with intent to deliver cocaine. Bail for Ortiz Jr. was set at $20,000 cash.

● Charles Ortiz Sr., 48, was charged with one felony count with intent to deliver cocaine. Bail was set at $10,000 cash for Ortiz Sr.
