Madison, WI - On Monday, campus and Madison police just after 5:00 p.m. arrested 12 University of Wisconsin-Madison students in Bascon Hall after occupying Chancellor David Ward's office during a protest rally demanding for the university to break ties with Palermo's Villa, Inc. Pizza products. The students at the rally were demanding for Interim Chancellor Ward to follow the recommendation made in November by the Labor Licensing Policy Committee (LLPC) to cut ties with Palermo. The LLPC found that Palermo violated the university's code of conduct and recommended for the university to cut ties with Palermo's products.
Several striking Palermo's Pizza employees, religious and student groups spoke at the rally.
Also on Monday, the National Labor Relations Board (LRB) in Washingtion, D.C. upheld the local decision of the LRB decision that Palermo Villa, Inc. did not violate labor laws when the company terminated multiple Hispanic employees suspected of being undocumented and not authorized to work in the U.S. after failing to provide legal status documents to work in the country.
