Medellín, Colombia - Federal Colombian authorities reported that Griselda Blanco, 69, of Medellín was brutally shot in the head by a gunman on September 3, as she left a Belén neigborhood butcher shop. She bled to death, according to her former daughter-in-law who witnessed the shooting and placed a bible in Blanco's chest as she died. The suspect and another man then fled the scene in a motorcycle, according to police.
Blanco was mainly known as the "Godmother of Cocaine" by authorities and included other alias as the "Black Widow" and "La Patata" in the 1970's and 1980's. She was instrumental in importing more than 3 tons of cocaine and establishing the lucrative cocaine routes to the U.S. from Colombia.
She moved to Miami in the late 1970's and was arrested in 1985 in Ervine, California by the U.S. government for drug trafficking and spent at least 19 years in several federal prisons after her conviction. In 2004, Blanco was deported back to Colombia and lived a subtle life in her hometown.
She is attributed to have ordered about 250 murders, but authorities could only allegedly connect 40 of those homicides to Blanco, according to U.S. federal authorities.
