Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico - Last Thursday, María de Mar Arjona Rivera, 19, was released from custody after posting $5,000 pesos ($384.00 U.S.) for bail, after being charged in an attempted prison escape. Fernando Campos, spokesperson for the Public Safety Secretary's Office confirmed that Rivera had made bail at 8:00 a.m. and court proceedings will continue against her. She was charged for trying to help her boyfriend Juan Ramírez Tijerina escape from the Chetumal prison inside a black suitcase on July 2.
Rivera is six months pregnant and is facing between 6 months to 5 years in prison, if convicted in the daring escape. Two other prisoners, Manuel López and Edwin Valdemar are also facing charges for helping Tijerina inside the suitcase and even carrying it inside the facility a short distance.
The criminal complaint states, Rivera went to have a conjugal vist with Tijerina at the prison center, which has such visits. Tijerina who is serving 20 years in prison for drug trafficking and crimes against the public health got inside the suitcase in a fetal position.
Rivera after spending Friday night with Tijerina, on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. she tried to pulled the suitcase up a set of stairs, she accidently bumped the suitcase and prison guards noticed something move inside, at the first inspection station. She told the prison guards that she was taking out Tijerina's dirty clothes to wash. The guards opened the suitcase and found Tijerina curled up inside.
The prison has three inspection stations as people are exiting the facility.
Tijerina was arrested on August 2007 by military police in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, Cancún while trying to unload two tons of cocaine from an airplane that was smuggled into Mexico from Colombia. Tijerina had a top position with the Sinaloa Cartel.
