Suspect extradited to U.S. to face federal car theft charges

Mexico City, Mexico - On Wednesday, the Mexican Federal Attorney General's Office reported that they have extradited Eliener Alfonso González, 42, to the United States of Amercia. González was wanted in connection with cloning vehicles and providing fake VIN registration documents in order to sell stolen vehicles in several U.S. states between 2000 to 2009.
In March 24, 2009, U.S. federal authorities arrested 13 suspects in connection with car-cloning in Tampa and Miami, Florida, and Chicago, Illinois. The criminal organization totalled about $27 million of reported losses to citizens and insurance companies in car thefts and cloning, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Florida.
González was part of an operation by the criminal enterprise that provided fake vehicle identification numbers (VIN) and documents from Mexico. The fake documents were sent to multiple commercial agencies and then distributed to members of the illegal cloning operation.
