Milwaukee, WI - The hit-and-run driver, Angel Romero, 29, of Racine was sentenced to 25 years in prison, but will do a mandatory 15 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision for the November 23, 2014 death of José Luis Peña Jr., 34. Romero fled to Laredo, Texas after killing Peña and was taken into custody for a violation of parole warrant when he was stopped for a traffic violation.
Police in Laredo say, that Romero was attempting to cross into Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico to escape prosecution. Romero had been convicted in 2012 for driving under the influence and his driver's license was suspended after refusing to take a blood test.
Milwaukee County Circuit Court Timothy Dugan gave Romero the maximum sentence, while the prosecutor had recommended at least eight years for pleading guilty to Peña's death on March 17.
Romero was charged with two felony counts for hit-and-run involving death and knowingly driving while revoked causing death with repeater offense enhancer. The second count, driving while revoked was dismissed, but was read in court as per plea bargain agreement between Romero and the prosecutor's office.
Romero will be back in court on May 26, 2015 for a restitution hearing to grant compensation for the Peña family.
