Waukesha - On Thursday, preliminary canvassing voter returns from several of the 72 counties around the state have put David T. Prosser Jr. ahead by 7,759 votes over JoAnne F. Kloppenburg. The largest votes counted for Prosser came from the City of Brookfield, but due to an error by Kathy Nickolaus, Waukesha County Clerk who admitted in a press conference that she failed to save and check that the Brookfield votes were counted on election night. The next day, Nickolaus said, she discovered the error after a canvassing to certify the totals and contacted the GAB of the error. She then registered a total of 14,315 votes from Brookfield with the GAB. The breakdown of the Brookfield votes are, 10,859 votes for Prosser and 3,456 votes for Kloppenburg.
Votes added from other areas gave Prosser an unofficial lead with 7,759 votes, which included 224 votes from Winnebago County and 12 more votes from Milwaukee County over Kloppenburg who gained almost 300 votes from several counties. The latest statewide vote change is just an example that voter totals could change back and forth as counties do their canvassing to certify totals.
The 72 Wisconsin counties have until April 15 to turn in their certifications to the GAB and candidates have until April 20 to ask for a recall. A recall will most likely take place, according to both the Prosser and Kloppenburg election campaigns.
About 1.5 million people voted in the statewide election.
On Wednesday, Kloppenburg was unofficially declared the winner by 204 votes for the State Supreme Court race by the Wisconsin Governement Accountability Board (GAB). Director and General Counsel Kevin J. Kennedy with the GAB confirmed that unofficially JoAnne F. Kloppenburg had won the election defeating David T. Prosser Jr. by more than several hundred votes in the Spring Election.
The Tuesday reported totals showed, Kloppenburg with 740,090 votes and Prosser with 739,886 votes. Kloppenburg had a lead with 204 votes.
