Madison - On Friday, the Government Accountability Board (GAB) confirmed that 21,700 signatures to recall State Republican Senator Dan Kapanke of La Crosse were turned in one month ahead of schedule. The recall organizers (Democrats and union members) had 60 days to collect the signatures. The recall petitions were due by May 2nd.
Kapanke will face an election, if the GAB approves the petitions with at least 15,588 valid signatures. Kapanke is being recall for voting to eliminate collective bargaining rights for most state workers in Governor Scott Walker's budget repair bill.
The union busting act, known as Act 10 has been stalled. On Friday, Dane County Judge Maryann Sumi confirmed an injunction is still in effect to keep it from being implemented. Sumi ordered the attorneys in the case to submit briefs by May. No hearing date has been decided.
The law will remain on hold for at least two months until Judge Sumi decides, if Republicans violated open meetings law when they passed it last month.
Seven other Republican state senators are also being recall and eight Senate Democrats. Governor Walker is expected to be recall as well, when he completes one year in office, according to Democrats and Unions.
