Mexico D.F., Mexico (HNNUSA) - Jaime González Durán, aka "EL Hummer" was sentenced to 16 years and 6 months in a Mexican prison for operating a criminal organization and for possession of a weapon. Other federal criminal charges in Mexico are also pending against Durán.
The U.S. has also indicted Durán in Washington D.C. for conspiring to distribute cocaine and drug trafficking and is seeking extradition.
He was arrested on November 7, 2008 in Reynosa, Tamaulipas by Mexican federal police. Durán was carrying about $150,000 U.S. dollars in cash when arrested, according to a press release from the Mexican Attorney General's Office .
Durán is one of the main leaders and a founder of the Zetas. He worked as a bodyguard for Osiel Cárdenas Guillén former kingping of the Gulf Cartel, who was extradited to the U.S., convicted in a federal court in Texas, and is serving 25 years in a federal prison.
Durán was the partner of Heriberto Lazcano, aka, "EL Lazca" also known as a key leader of the Zetas.
In 2008, Durán was in charge of the Zeta Cartel operations in the following Mexican states of Tamualipas, Nuevo Leon, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Mexico Distrito Federal, Michoacán, Tabasco, Quintana Roo and Veracruz.
