Milwaukee, Wisconsin - On Tuesday, Samuel Sharpe Jr., 43, aka, Jehovah, a known homeless man and veteran was fatally shot around 1:10 p.m. by multiple unidentified Columbus police officers (5) at the 1400 block W. Vliet Street in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) by permission of the City of Columbus Chief of Police Elaine R. Bryant from Ohio released a Columbus police officer body-worn camera video footage of the officer-involved shooting that fatally shot Sharpe. Chief Bryant decided to release the police body-worn camera video to avoid the integrity of the active investigation by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team. Other remaining police body-worn camera videos will be released in accordance to the investigation, according to Chief Bryant.
According to the preliminary investigation, Sharpe and an unidentified man were having an altercation near a group of uniformed Columbus police officers assigned to the outer RNC 2024 perimeter when they noticed the two men having an altercation and also noticed Sharpe had knives in each hand.
The video shows a Columbus police officer running (other officers are also heard in the video running in the background) towards Sharpe and the other man, while ordering Sharpe to drop the knives and as Sharpe turned towards and immediately approached the other man with the knives (looked like Sharpe was about to stab the other man), Columbus police officers fired their service weapons fatally striking Sharpe. Columbus police are in Milwaukee to assist along with other numerous law enforcement officers from around the Midwest to help assist with security of the RNC 2024 along with MPD and the U.S. Secret Service.
Angelique Sharpe posted on her Facebook account, that her brother was trying to defend himself from the other individual. Sharpe posted, "This officer wanted to kill my brother. If somebody hit me OR YOU, we got the right to use self defense. The officer don't even know the story before intervening. Why not a Tazer? He didn't have time to even respond to commands because You trying to defend yourself. He has Multiple sclerosis and his mobility is extremely compromised. He can't even run. He didn't even turn around. WTF??"
A witness of the fatal shooting recorded the aftermath and and posted it on his Facebook page Diamond Dismuke, he says that Columbus police didn't try to deescalate the situation, they just shot Sharpe to death and the other individual was also shot.
