Milwaukee, Wisconsin - On Wednesday, Enrique Harris Murguia, 31, was sentenced to 12 months probation, and must serve 30-days at the CRC-Milwaukee County Community Reintegration Center (formerly the House of Correction) in Franklin under Huber law, which he will be allowed for work release and then must return to the CRC every night, and also seek treatment.
Murguia (D-Milw) who is currently a candidate for the Wisconsin State 8th Assembly District was convicted of OWI - operating while intoxicated (2nd), a misdemeanor criminal offense on May 14, 2024.
Murguia was ordered to provide a DNA sample, must do 24 hours of community service, absolute sobriety with random testing, no driving without a valid license and insurance, 11 months of driver license revocation, and 12 months of ignition interlock. No restitution pay was required in the case.
Murguia on October 4, 2020, while OWI, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into two trees and a City light pole at the 1300 block of W. Fon Du Lac Ave. in Milwaukee totalling his vehicle. After crashing, several witnesses saw Murguia get out staggering drunk from his vehicle and left the crash scene. He was later located by police and taken into custody.
Murguia was never charged with hit-and-run.
This is the second time Murguia has run for the 8th Assembly District. The first time, he was found not to have the required 200 valid nomination signatures to be placed on the ballot by the Wisconsin Election Commission (WEC) in 2020. Murguia had 197 valid nomination signatures in June 2020, which was 3 signatures short, according to the WEC.
Murguia is facing Sylvia Ortiz-Velez (D-Milw), the incumbent in the Primary Election.
The Primary Election is scheduled for August 13, 2024 and the General Election on November 5, 2024.
