Poulos was arrested in Panama after killing his 21-year-old girlfriend in Bogotá.

Bogotá, Colombia - On Tuesday, John Nelson Poulos, 35, of Windlake, Wisconsin was charged in Colombia with the homicide and tempering with evidence of his 21-year-old girlfriend identified as Valentina Trespalacios Hidalgo, a popular Colombian Guaracha dance genre Disc Jockey (DJ) on January 22, 2023. Poulos fled Colombia and was taken into custody in Panana when he was boarding a flight to Istanbul. He was extradited to Colombia.
If convicted, Poulos is facing up to 50 years in prison for combined counts.
The folded body of Trespalacios was found in a blue suitcase by a recycling collector inside a trash container in the suburb of Fontibón in the outskirts of Bogotá and he notified police. The Trespalacios family reported to police that the last person to see Trespalacios was Poulos.
Trespalacios cellphone was found in a trash can at the El Dorado airport near the area where her body was found in Fontibón.
When Poulos fled Colombia, he disabled his social media accounts.
Poulos had proposed to Trespalacios and were engaged to be married. Poulos also had hired a private investigator to follow Trespalacios at nightclubs and other venues due to his jealousy, according to police.
Poulos is still married and has three children in Wisconsin and a Civil Bench warrant was issued by Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Carl Ashley for Poulos on January 31, 2023 for the amount of $19,190.00 in child support in the divorce case #2021FA000206 Ashley Shannon Poulos v. John Nelson Poulos filed on January 13, 2021.
Poulos has refused to disclose his financial records, according to the divorce case.
Authorities say, that Trespalacios was brutally beaten in the head, chest and other parts of the body before being strangled to death by Poulos.
