Wisconsin And National Faith Congregations Including Immigration Rights Orgs Plan Black Friday And Cyber Monday Boycott

Faith based congregations including SOFIA, Gamaliel and immigration rights organizations plan to boycott on Black Friday and Cyber Monday to show economic empowerment of Latinos and allies advocating for immigration reform and to stop ICE's family separations.

Milwaukee, WI - On Sunday, during an emergency community meeting that was held after recent statewide ICE raids in 14 counties in Wisconsin that resulted in the arrests of 83 undocumented individuals out of a targeted list of 250, it was announced that multiple statewide congregations of faith including Gamaliel, a national organization with affiliates in numerous state are planning a Black Friday and Cyber Sunday boycott. Bernie Gonzalez, a community organizer from Stewards of Prophetic, Hopeful, Intentional Action (SOFIA) in Waukesha announced at the community meeting that his organization, which is faith based and part of WISDOM, a statewide organization of more than 130 member congregations and 9 affiliates including SOPHIA and the national Gamaliel are planning a national boycott in November on Black Friday and Cyber Monday of certain businesses, corporations and stores that don't support immigration reform and help support anti-immigrant laws.

A Milwaukee emergency meeting about recent immigration raids in Wisconsin, was hosted by Wisconsin State Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milw.) on Sunday. Members of the Latino community were invited to the meeting at the Asencion Lutheran Church, 1236 S. Layton Blvd. where leaders, immigration lawyers, ACLU, LULAC, public elected officials, Voces de la Frontera, Racine Interfaith Coalition, and other organizations provided information about resources available to the immigrant community in the state.
