Minneapolis, Minnesota - On Sunday, Minneapolis police reported that the Metrodome roof had collapsed as a result of heavy snowfall. The roof apparently couldn't hold the weight of the snow that had accumulated during the blizzard that hit the tri-state area.
About 17.1 inches of snow had fallen since Friday in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area known as the twin cities. The snow stopped falling around 10:00 p.m. Saturday and snow removal crews were pulled from the roof for safety measures, according to Bill Lester, executive director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission. Later, the roof deflated. No one was reported injured, according to police. The stadium holds 64,000 people.
The roof had previously deflated due to heavey snow in 1981, 1982 and 1983, NFL records show.
The snow storm hit Iowa, Minnesota and on Sunday reached Southeastern Wisconsin after it rained all day on Saturday.
KARE 11 TVNews reported that the game between the New York Giants and the Vikings, who were scheduled to play Sunday at noon at the Metrodome had been rescheduled until Monday in Detroit.
