Madison, WI - On Monday, Wisconsin State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milw.) released a post on his Facebook account alleging that State Senator Dave Craig (R-Town of Vernon) is introducing a constitutional amendment this month to restrict Governor Tony Evers (D) line item veto powers after Evers partially vetoes 78 Republican state budget items and added $87M in K-12 public school funding aid in his first state budget signed into law. Senator Carpenter posted on Facebook, "WARNING! WI Republicans are once again trying to limit Governor Evers' veto powers in yet another power grab.
Senator Craig is introducing a constitutional amendment to further restrict the Governor's line item veto powers, because Evers did what 70% of voters support.
One of the main reasons Governor Evers won last November's election was he advocated for increased funding for public education.
The GOP drastically cut the Governor's proposed budget for public school aid by about half a billion dollars.
The Governor used his line item veto to creatively increase school aids by $87 million dollars, since Republicans refused to support adequate public education funding.
The GOP is so incensed by the Governor's action, who is doing exactly what voters want!
In yet another power grab the GOP is introducing a constitutional amendment this month to prohibit line item vetoes that increase appropriations in the state budget.
Never mind they didn't even consider such a limits on Governors Walker and Thompson, but now all of a sudden they see the light!
The GOP will pass this constitutional amendment in this fall's session and will vote again on second consideration next session in January 2021. Then they will place the constitutional amendment on the April 2021 election ballot to quickly pass it as a binding referendum. This way Republicans will limit Governor Evers line item veto authority for his next state budget.
It's Republicans Vos and Fitzgerald drunk with power trying to restrict Governor Evers authority in yet another Republican power grab. Absolute power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely!
Speak up and spread the word if you want to stop these power hungry Republicans. Don't let the GOP get away with it this time!"
