Milwaukee, WI - On Friday, Milwaukee County Sheriff deputies joined community neighborhood residents at Sherman Park, but the confrontation was unusual, both deputies and residents participated in soccer and other games while at the park. The deputies are actually practicing good policing and gaining the trust of residents and community stakeholders.
More good policing tactics are needed between Milwaukee police including deputies with the community it serves to protect. It seems, the unusual approach by deputies is working and could be successful in neutralizing tensions in the Sherman Park neighborhood.
Several days ago dozens of teens engage in a melee at Sherman Park that made national news when they confronted police in riot gear. Windows were broken in a BP gas station, a Milwaukee County Transit bus and a police vehicle. No one was arrested, but on Thursday, a White Milwaukee cop pulled a 12-year-old boy from his bicycle and arrested him for yelling profanity as he left the park. The boy was taken into custody.
