Newtown, CT - On Friday, Adam Lanza, 20, of Newton, New Jersey walked into the Sandy Hook Elementary School before 9:30 a.m. with four weapons including a semi-automatic .223 Caliber rifle and shot at least 26 people including 20 children (12 girls and 8 boys) from a first grade class between the ages of 6 to 7 years-old, the principal and teachers. Two of the 20 children shot at the scene died later from their fatal wounds at a local hospital.
Lanza is also deceased of a self-inflicted wound. Police found Adam's mother (Nancy) body at her Newtown home near the school. She was fatally shot in the face earlier in the day. Then, Lanza went to the elementary school and shot the children.
A total of 27 people were murdered and with Lanza makes it 28 people who died on Friday.
Initially, Adam's brother, Ryan was believed to have been the gunman, but he was taken into custody by police for questioning. Adam was mistakenly identified as Ryan, 24, which later it was determined that Adam who suffers from a mental illness had been the actual shooter.
The mass murder at Sandy Hook is the worst and deadliest elementary school massacre in U.S. history.
Lanza's mother had worked at Sandy Hook and recently had no connection with the school.
Newtown Police, Connecticut State investigators and the FBI continue to investigate the crime scene.
