Chicago - On Tuesday, Ivan Hernández-Barroso, 28, a Mexican national wanted for a March 12, 2005 homicide in Cuerámaro in the Mexican state of Guanajuato was deported to Mexico. He fled into the U.S. to avoid prosecution in Mexico.
Hernández-Barroso was flown from Chicago to Harlingen, Texas and then turned over to Mexican authorities in Matamoros, Mexico by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) agents.
Hernández-Barroso was arrested on March 11, 2008, by the South Bend Police Department in Indiana for drunken driving and transferred to ICE custody after a criminal records check revealed his prior removal from the U.S. Hernández-Barroso had been previously deported after serving a three-year sentence for a 2003 conviction in California for assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon, according to ICE.
He was convicted for a re-entry federal violation and sentenced to 48 months in prison. While Hernández-Barroso was serving his sentence, ICE officials learned that he was wanted in Mexico on homicide charges. He was released from the Oxford Federal Correctional Institute in Wisconsin on August 16 and turned over to ICE for deportation.
The Mexican criminal complaint alleged, that he fatally shot a woman after she refused to dance with him at a party. Several women were at the party in Cuerámaro and both had refused to dance with him. After they left the dance in a pick-up truck, Hernández-Barroso shot at them killing one of them, according to the Mexican Attorney General's Office (PGR) complaint.
