Fresno, California - On Tuesday, police confirmed the arrest of Gregorio Gonzalez, 24, of Fresno in connection with the abduction of an 8-year-old girl on Monday evening. Gonzalez red pickup truck featured in media reports was spotted by man who recognized the description provided in an amber alert. The man was identified by Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer as Victor Perez. Perez is attributed to helping the girl escape from the abductor.
Perez jumped into his car and followed Gonzalez until he was able to intercept Gonzalez after seeing the young girl peeping out the rear window. Gonzalez was forced to stopped and then the girl opened the truck door and escaped out of his truck. Then, Gonzalez drove away.
Perez called police at about 7:00 a.m. and alerted them with the direction where Gonzalez had gone. Perez followed Gonzalez and was able to get a partial license plate.
Another samaritan had stopped to help the girl and stayed with her until police arrived.
Gonzalez was captured by a California Highway Patrol officer in an apartment building parking lot less than an hour later after a tipster called police saying the truck was behind a church. When police arrived he wasn't at the church. Gonzalez had just moved to the apartment parking lot where his truck was spotted. The officer approached the truck and Gonzalez stood up and was taken into custody without incident, according to Chief Dyer.
The 8-year-old girl was taken to a nearby hospital and reunited with her parents. Police say, Gonzalez a known Bulldogs street gang member had exposed himself to other young children before abducting the 8-year-old girl. The girl was sexually assaulted within the 11 hours she was taken, according to Fresno police.
Authorities say that 74% of child abductions resulting in death, a child is murdered within three hours of first being abducted.
