Washington,  D.C. - On April 30, 2025, Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) expressed alarm in social media over a vote by the House Judiciary Committee, stating that Republicans had approved a measure allowing Donald Trump to deport U.S. citizens. Swalwell described the action as a move toward dictatorship, emphasizing, "They just voted to allow [Trump] to deport American citizens." He further warned, "That's a dictatorship. That's a f***ing dictatorship."

This development follows the introduction of a substantial budget proposal by House Republicans, allocating significant funds to enhance immigration enforcement. The proposal includes nearly $46.5 billion for border wall construction and provisions for hiring approximately 20,000 new immigration officers. Additionally, it imposes steep fees on migrants seeking asylum. Critics argue that such measures could lead to the erosion of due process rights and the potential for wrongful deportations, including those of U.S. citizens.

These MAGA Republicans voted for it:

• Jim Jordan, Ohio, Chair
• Darrell Issa, California
• Andy Biggs, Arizona
• Tom McClintock, California
