Dominican Republic - On Monday, airport security at the Areopuerto de la Americas busted Jaime Vargas of New York trying to smuggle heroin into the U.S. Vargas a bachata pop singer who uses the stage name "Jimmy Bauer" had injested 88 pellets (1.04 kilogram) totalling 2.2 pounds of pure heroin. He went through a security, when authorities noticed suspicious behavior from Vargas. Apparently, Vargas became sick moments before boarding a flight to the U.S. after authorities questioned him and an X-ray examination of his abdomen revealed multiple pellets inside, according to Colonel Ramon Alcides Rodriguez Veras, spokesperson for the Santo Domingo Drug Enforcement agency.
Authorities had to transport Vargas to the military central hospital when he collapsed and became ill. At the hospital, doctors removed 88 pellets of heroin and two others had ruptured inside Vargas' stomach. He is very lucky to survive and is doing well and should be stable by Friday. If Vargas would have made the flight to the U.S., most likely he wouldn't have survived the flight, according to authorities.
Once Vargas orginally from New York is released from the hospital, he will be taken into custody pending multiple charges. He is now facing smuggling, trafficking, and other related drug charges in the Dominican Republic.
