Milwaukee, WI - On Saturday, a badge collector found and purchased a rare and unique police badge (number 399) believed to have belonged to the late Milwaukee Police Sergeant Raymond A. Nencki, 38, who was shot while on duty on September 22, 1959 and died of his injuries on October 5, 1959. A police report about the day Sergeant Nencki was shot stated, that Sergeant Nencki responded to a call of a suspicious salesman at 3953 N. 63rd Street.
When Nencki arrived at the scene to speak with the family that made the initial call, the suspect pulled a gun and held Sergeant Nencki at gunpoint. A second officer arrived at the scene, Sergeant Nencki adviced Dectective Joseph "Joe" Friday to maintain his position (stay back) and when both Nencki and Friday tried to reason with the suspect. The suspect fired two shots at Sergeant Nencki striking him in the abdomen and throat. While Nencki fell, he discharged and emptied his weapon at the suspect. Det. Friday at the scene then discharged his weapon and killed the suspect. The suspect died at the scene and it was later determined that he was wanted for a homicide of a woman a day before Nencki was shot.
Sergeant Nencki died fifteen days later of his injuries. Nencki made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the citizens of Milwaukee.
Sergeant Nencki joined the Milwaukee Police Department on January 2, 1948 and was assigned to the Seventh Police District Station located at 3136 N. 36th St. (1928-1980), in 1980 the station was relocated to 3626 W. Fond du Lac Ave. where it continues to operate.
Retired Detective Friday died of lung cancer at the age of 75 in 2001 at a Brookfield Hospice.
