Milwaukee, Wisconsin - On Thursday, Acting Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed a resolution #211710 approving a Gathering Place Study and Outdoor Recreational Plan at the César E. Chávez Placita (public plaza) where the life-size bronze statue of Chávez is displayed at the Supermercado El Rey Grocery store property located at the 900 block of S. César E. Chávez Drive in the Southside of Milwaukee. Also some members of the Milwaukee Common Council including Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa and Alderman Michael Murphy, Dr. Patricia Nájera, Executive Director of Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative, members of the César E. Chávez Business Improvement District and Ernesto Villarreal, one of the owners of El Rey was also present to celebrate the 95th Chávez Birthday with the Hispanic and none-Latino community that attended the annual event.
According to information released by the Acting Mayor Johnson's office, the Comprehensive Outdoor Recearion Plan (CORP) is required for local communities to participate in outdoor recreation grant programs administered by the State of Wisconsin and, in certain cases, the Federal Government.
The study conducted by the Department of City Department, the Department of Public Works and the Environmental Collaboration Office identified locations that could be developed into neighborhood gathering places for economic development and cultural programming. The study also promotes private development that serves as gathering places, gathering places would include public parks and public lands and repurposing public streets and right-of-way as gathering spaces, according to the study.
Today, the Hispanic community in Milwaukee and around the nation celebrated the life time achievements of United Farm Workers (UFW) leader Cesár E. Chávez on his 95th Birthday, March 31, 2022. Chávez passed away in 1993 at the age of 66.
Milwaukee's Southside became the 8th location in the nation and the 1st city in the Midwest to unveil a Chávez life size bronze statue in 2016.
