At around 9:00 p.m. on that Saturday night, they were fatally shot after getting involved in a minor fender bender, according to Chicago police homicide investigators. A group of unidentified men attacked the couple, and dragged Perez out of the driver's side and beat her. She was then shot in the neck. Soon after, Arzuaga got out of the vehicle and attempted to use his body the shield her, when the alleged suspect in the photo being circulating in an attempt to identify him fired multiple gun shots fatally striking Arzuaga from behind at the scene. Arzuaga died later that night at a local hospital. Perez was also shot in the neck and died four days later.

A Chicago City street shot spotter camera recorded the couple's deadly shooting, according to police.

The couple are survived by two children ages 5 and 1.

A GoFundMe account for the deceased couple has raised more than $121,000 for their funeral expenses.
