Milwaukee, WI - On Monday, a man was taken into custody by police after deliberately destroying the outdoor shrine of the Virgen de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe) with a metal fence post at the West side of the St. Adalbert Catholic Church at 2100 block of S. 20th Street in Milwaukee. The suspect, Joshua Cisero, 20, was video recorded before 8:53 p.m. by Ernesto Nava, who is known as the barefoot runner and the video was posted on his Facebook account Pies Descalsos Ernesto Nava.
Cisero was confronted by nearby residents who kept him from fleeing the crime scene and when asked why did he vandalized the statue, he said that the Lady of Guadalupe was a fake and that God was with him who was jealous of people worshipping fake statues.
Cisero is facing a felony vandalism charge for destroying the Lady of Guadalupe fiberglass statue, according to police.
Multiple members of the church arrived at the scene, but could give an estimated cost of the statue or damaged suffered during the vandalism act on a Catholic statue.
The Lady of Guadalupe at St. Adalbert Church is the second to be destroyed in months. Also the outdoor display of the baby Jesus Christ at St. Anthony's Church at the 900 W. Historic Mitchell Street was vandalized as well. The baby Christ left arm was broken.
