On Monday, undocumented immigrants, Francisco Medina was appointed to the Health and Education Commission and Julian Zatarian to the Parks and Recreation Commission in Huntington Park, California. The Huntington Park Council will vote on appointments on August 17 and Mayor Karina Macias says that she supports the appointments.
City Councilman Jhonny Pineda helped appoint both Medina and Zatarian who worked on his election campaign in March.
The city attorney confirmed, people who serve in commissions don't have to live in the city or be U.S. Citizens. Both Medina and Zatarian will head the Commissions and will not be paid, but will serve as volunteers.
Huntington Park will be the first city in the U.S. to allow undocumented immigrants to serve in City Commissions.
