San Juan, Puerto Rico - On Friday, Ivania Zayas Ortiz, 38, a popular urban style singer and song writer/composer who died on early Sunday in a hit-and-run incident was placed in internal rest after funeral services and a street procession to a local cemetery in Salinas. Zayas Ortiz around 1:00 a.m. was walking across PR-3 near the Trujillo Alto highway when she was struck by Daniel Roena Vélez, 28, who didn't stop and fled the scene. Vélez on Monday surrendered to police. He was accompanied by his father and an attorney. His attorney advice Vélez not to say anything to police. Formal charges against Vélez for driving without a license and under the influence of alcohol causing death, attempting to hide evidence and hit-and-run causing death are pending.
Yasmín Pérez, the director for the Criminal Investigation Unit confirmed that there is enough credible evidence that Vélez was driving when Zayas Ortiz was struck and killed while walking home.
Police are looking into video surveillance footage that might have recorded the incident near the place where Zayas Ortiz was killed.
Vélez allegedly abandon the vehicle at Villas de Lomas Verdes in Cupey. The vehicle was impounded for evidence.
According to court records, Vélez owes more than $4,000 for traffic violations, including 7 speeding citations for going 12 to 30 miles over the speed limit. He has more than 50 citations for speeding, running a red traffic light, improper use of a lane, driving without a license and not wearing a seat belt. The vehicle is registered to his father.
Pérez believes that Vélez could have been driving while intoxicated.
Zayas Ortiz was known to do charity work, advocated for the homeless and promoted awareness against violence towards women.
Zayas Ortiz was also the sister of former Miss Puerto Rico, Elizabeth Zayas.
