San Juan, Nuevo Leon, Mexico - On early Sunday, Mexican federal and state authorities were called to a highway in the direction of Reynosa near the town of San Juan in the municipality of Cadereyte where 49 decapitated bodies, mostly men were found along the side of the highway. The bodies of the victims were missing their heads, limbs, hands and feet, which included the bodies of six women were found around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday.
Some of the victims are believed to be immigrants from South and Central America, according to their physical features, authorities reported.
Authorities suspect the mass killings were carried out by the Zetas, who are feuding with the Gulf Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel for control of the multi-billion drug smuggling bodertown routes. On May 4, 23 bodies, including nine victims hanging from a bridge were found in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. On May 9, 18 bodies were also discovered in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos, Jalisco.
